A Life Dedicated to Music from Childhood
Born in São Paulo, Roberto Tibiriçá’s relationship with music began early. Influenced by a family of musicians — his grandmother was a pianist from the silent film era and his mother also played — he received his first piano at a young age and began formal studies at eight. He trained with distinguished teachers including Dinorah de Carvalho, Antonio Bezzan, Gilberto Tinetti, and Nelson Freire. A pivotal influence was the legendary conductor Eleazar de Carvalho, with whom he worked closely for eighteen years after winning the Young Conductors Competition of the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP) in two consecutive editions.
These formative experiences shaped a conductor known for both technical precision and emotional depth. Tibiriçá’s early international experience included a period as assistant conductor at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, Portugal, before he returned to Brazil to take on major leadership roles.
Leadership Across Brazil’s Leading Orchestras
In 1994, Tibiriçá assumed the positions of artistic director and principal conductor of the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, a role that established him as a national figure. He later led the Orquestra Petrobras Sinfônica, the Sinfônica Heliópolis of the Instituto Baccarelli, the Orquestra Sinfônica de Minas Gerais, and several other ensembles. Internationally, he conducted the Orquesta Simón Bolívar in Venezuela and appeared with orchestras in Uruguay and beyond.
In 2022 he was appointed musical director and principal conductor of the Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná. During his tenure he focused on artistic renewal, expanded the orchestra’s repertoire, and worked to bring concert music to broader audiences across the state. His final public appearances took place in July 2026, including a memorable concert in Londrina as part of the Guaíra para Todos project and a tribute performance at the Teatro Guaíra.
Recognition and Lasting Contributions
Tibiriçá’s achievements were widely acknowledged. He occupied Chair No. 5 of the Academia Brasileira de Música and was an honorary member of the Academia Nacional de Música. Among his many honors were the Prêmio Carlos Gomes for Best Symphonic Conductor (received twice), the APCA Award, the Ordem do Ipiranga, and in 2024 the title of Doctor by Notório Saber from the Federal University of Minas Gerais.
Beyond the podium, he was deeply committed to the formation of new generations of musicians. Colleagues and former students frequently spoke of his generosity, high standards, and genuine care for the development of young talent. Institutions that worked with him consistently highlighted his dual legacy of artistic excellence and educational dedication.
A Courageous Final Chapter
For approximately two years Tibiriçá faced a battle with cancer. Even while undergoing treatment, he continued to fulfill his responsibilities with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná whenever his health permitted, demonstrating remarkable resilience and love for his craft. His determination to remain connected to the orchestra and its public until the final months of his life left a profound impression on those around him.
The Theatro Municipal de São Paulo is hosting a public wake: Saturday, October 3, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Salão Nobre, and Sunday, October 4, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the stage of the main auditorium. Burial is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Cemitério São Paulo in Pinheiros.
An Irreplaceable Presence in Brazilian Music
In statements released after his death, the Theatro Municipal described Tibiriçá as “one of the fundamental names of concert music in Brazil,” emphasizing that his legacy lives on in the orchestras he led and, above all, in the many musicians whose careers he influenced. The Centro Cultural Teatro Guaíra and the Orquestra Sinfônica do Paraná expressed similar sentiments, noting that while the silence after the music is painful, the body of work he leaves behind will continue to resonate.
Roberto Tibiriçá’s career embodied the highest ideals of the conducting profession: meticulous preparation, respect for the score, care for the musicians under his baton, and a lifelong desire to share the beauty of orchestral music with the widest possible audience. In an era when classical music often struggles for visibility, he remained a steadfast advocate for its relevance and emotional power.
As the Brazilian music community gathers to say goodbye, the tributes make clear that his influence will not fade with his departure. Every young conductor who approaches the podium with seriousness, every orchestra that strives for both technical excellence and human connection, and every audience member moved by a performance carries forward a part of the standard he set.
Maestro Roberto Tibiriçá leaves behind more than a list of prestigious appointments and awards. He leaves a living example of what it means to dedicate one’s life to music with integrity, generosity, and unwavering commitment. That legacy will continue to inspire long after the final notes of farewell have sounded.
